Lo-Melkhiin killed three hundred girls before he came to my village, looking for a wife.
When Lo-Melkhiin – a formidable king – arrives at her desert home, she knows that he will take her beautiful sister for a wife. Desperate to save her sister from certain death, she makes the ultimate sacrifice – leaving home and family behind to live with a fearful man.
But it seems that a strange magic flows between her and Lo-Melkhiin, and night after night, she survives. Finding power in storytelling, the words she speaks are given strange life of their own. Little things, at first: a dress from home, a vision of her sister. But she dreams of bigger, more terrible magic: power enough to save a king . . . if only she can stop her heart from falling for a monster.
I had no idea what kind of book A Thousand Nights would be when I picked it up. It took me a while to get into the flow of things and for confusion over narration to right itself, but I understand now that without that time and confusion I would not have been able to fully enjoy the read.
Anyway, I honestly could never have imagined in a lifetime what this book was about. I can’t even begin to tell you about it either. All I can tell you though is that you will need to completely open your mind and energy to understand and read it without any knowledge so you can be taken wholeheartedly into the desert and into a world where good versus evil grips you tight. To be allowed into the inner sanctuary, mind and soul of a lady with a heart of purple and the inner strength of a lioness who defies every rule and regulation and chooses instead to stand alone, stand proud and fight for herself.
Thoroughly enjoyable, but maybe a tad too wordy.
A dark, eerie and mysterious tale with some questioning twists, but overall a enchanting mighty, read. And, one in which most adults will be blown away by.

K. Johnston had several jobs and one vocation before she became a published writer. If she’s learned anything, it’s that things turn out weird sometimes, and there’s not a lot you can do about it. Well, that and how to muscle through awkward fanfic because it’s about a pairing she likes.
