Book Review: Big Sexy Love by Kirsty Greenwood.

💙Big Sexy Love by Kirsty Greenwood.

Source: author request.

💙BLURB: Olive Brewster is living a small, safe life. She’s happy enough with her job at the local market, it’s cool that she has no boyfriend to fret over, she even likes that she still lives in her childhood home. No drama, no fuss, no problems! Everything is fine. Super duper fine.

Except … Olive’s best friend in the world , Birdie, is dying.

Birdie has one final wish. She wants to track down her first love, her epic once in a lifetime love, her Big Sexy Love, Chuck. And because she’s stuck in the hospital she needs Olive’s help to do it. But there’s a teeny problem: Chuck is somewhere in New York and Olive has never even left her home town, let alone roamed the crazy streets of Manhattan!

As if the big city isn’t scary enough, Olive has to contend with Seth, a cocky comedy TV writer who thinks she’s a joke; Anders, a bored socialite who’s taken a shine to her; and the fact that no matter how hard she tries to track down Chuck, he doesn’t seem to want to be found.

Can Olive learn to overcome her fears, abandon her old safe routine and fulfil her best friend’s last wish?  It’s going to take extra bravery, one badass attitude and a whole lot of Big Sexy Love to make this happen …

💙REVIEW: OM-Fucking-G! You know that excitement you get when you squeal silently to yourself whilst clenching your gnashers together and shaking your fists a bit? That is what you get when you read this book. THAT.IS.WHAT.YOU. GET! You don’t even need me to say anything else now do you? You know that’s the one. The link to buy is right here 👉🏼 BUY IT…  But If you do want to hear me waffle on about it then be my guest and go right ahead….

Big Sexy Love is without a doubt Greenwood at her absolute best. I don’t know how she’s going to top this one I really don’t. It’s just sooo good. Like proper good though and am not even messing. Please go and buy it. It’s a treat and a half it really is. It is the perfect book to make you smile at any time and any place.

Ok, so protagonist Olive Brewster is a knob. Not even a little one, a full-blown massive one. And girls we all know we love one of those 🤦🏻‍♀️😉moving on….

Olive is right now standing at being my favourite character of ALL time. ALL TIME THOUGH! I died laughing so many times with her shenanigans, northern charm, sarcasm and utter could not give a fuck attitude mixed with a shyness and confusing demeanour. She is outstanding! It is such a pleasure to watch her blossom throughout the book and it is a blessing to be able to read about her friendship with the fantastic Birdie too.

I honestly idolised every single part of it. It’s heartbreaking, heartwarming, romantic, piss yourself funny, northern to a tee and utterly fucking joyous. It broke my heart in the most amazing way possible. I know right? How the fuck can that happen? Clever minds and fantastic writing and fabulous plots, characters, and love can actually make that happen. Such a wonderful and inspiring book. Go buy it! You know you want to.

Also, if there is a prize for making someone’s heartbreaking tear-snot erupt over electronic reading devices with full on snorting laughter? Kirsty, my friend you deserve that prize. Shit memes have never been more funny in a heartbreaking moment.

Big Sexy Love is my Big Sexy Love this year for sure.

P.S… Kirsty Greenwood, I love you. Ahh no I really do. You are an amazing author and I totally fucking love your work.

Queen of the mother fucking northern authors – baby! (You have to sing that sentence like Snoop Dogg sings ‘the King of the mother fucking westcoast’ in Eminem’s Bitch Please ll.) Get your microphone out girl you’ve got singing to do🎤👸🏼

BT – Blood Tides by Claire McGowan

Happy Wednesday everyone.
As always it’s lovely having you with me as we take on day number 6 on Claire McGowan’s Blood Tide Blog Tour.

Of course, I have all the book and author gossip for you and we’re being spoiled with a guest post by Claire herself.

Shall we get started?

Blurb: Forensic psychologist Paula Maguire returns in BLOOD TIDE, the fifth novel in Claire McGowan’s acclaimed series. If you enjoyed Sharon Bolton’s LITTLE BLACK LIES or Elly Griffiths’ THE WOMAN IN BLUE, you will love this new novel from the author of THE SILENT DEAD and A SAVAGE HUNGER.

Called in to investigate the disappearance of a young couple during a violent storm, Paula Maguire, forensic psychologist, has mixed feelings about going back to Bone Island. Her last family holiday as a child was spent on its beautiful, remote beaches and returning brings back haunting memories of her long-lost mother.

It soon becomes clear that outsiders aren’t welcome on the island, and with no choice but to investigate the local community, Paula soon suspects foul play, realising that the islanders are hiding secrets from her, and each other.

With another storm fast approaching, Paula is faced with a choice. Leave alive or risk being trapped with a killer on an inescapable island, as the blood tide rushes in…

I have to be totally honest here and say I’m new to Claire McGowan’s work and I know this is book number five in what I’ve heard is an absolutely phenomenal series. After much deliberation, I decided I wasn’t going to start with book one and start with Blood Tide as a stand-alone. I’m not even telling you my thoughts about it right now because I’m not finished, but my silence is NOT due to me not liking it. It’s due to me having a big massive mouth and I’m scared I’ll tell you what’s in my head and what I think is going on – which I’ll probably be completely wrong about like, but you never know. I do not want to do that. I want to give you my review properly! On the low though, GO BUY THIS BOOK!

Well my fellow book geeks, that is your lot. Thank you all once again for being with me and Claire here on TBGWP today. You’re all superstar book geeks. Huge shout out of course to CM for allowing me to be apart of this tour and of course to Millie at Headline for being awesome.

BT – Me, You & Tiramisu by Charlotte Butterfield.

Happy Saturday y’all!

Thank you for joining me today as I host day two of the fabulous Me, You & Tiramisu blog tour.

Today, I have an exclusive blog piece written just for us by author Charlotte Butterfield. I know, yeah! Spoiled us aren’t we?

First though, let’s get a look at this book and what it’s all about.

No, hang on a minute. Please can I just mention this now though before I forget to tell you? Ok, so already 2017 has seriously been proving that the romance/chicklit/romcom genres are totally at the top of their game and back at the top, I absolutely love it! I honestly went on a little break last year away from the genre, but some of these upcoming titles, including this one are proper spot on!

Sorry, here we go….

💜 Blurb: It all started with a table for two…

Life for self-confessed bookworm Jayne Brady couldn’t be better – she has a twin sister she adores, a cosy little flat above a deli and now she’s found love with her childhood crush, gorgeous chef Will.

But when Will becomes a Youtube sensation, thanks to his delicious cookery demos (both the food and his smile!), their life of contentment come crashing down around them. Can Jayne have her Tiramisu and eat it?

💜Links to buy:

Publication for the PaperBack version of this read won’t be available until March 9th, but not to worry we have the ebook to keep us company until then. Links as always down below.

💜About the author:

Former magazine editor Charlotte Butterfield was born in Bristol in 1977. She studied English at Royal Holloway University and an MPhil in Gender and Women’s Studies at Birmingham University before becoming a journalist and copywriter. She moved to Dubai in 2005 and lives with her husband and three children.
You can find out more about Charlotte via her social media links.

💜 Journalist to novelist by Charlotte Butterfield.

There’s a scene in Me, You and Tiramisu where a journalist character is frantically trying to scrabble around for a news story to fill a column with and contemplating ringing up celebrities out of the blue, asking if they were gay, and if the celeb in question said no, she would run the story with the headline ‘XXX denies being homosexual’. Thankfully for the last ten years I’ve mainly written about houses and interior design rather than sordid gossip, but when I first started out I too had my fair share of dubious assignments. Standing in the cold in front of a rather insalubrious ‘adult’ shop the day before Valentines Day asking customers what they bought was one of my first commissions – the highlight being a lady who asked to remain anonymous, let’s call her Sally, who bought her partner a thong with an elephant trunk covering his modesty. Other weird commissions involved visiting five clairvoyants in the same day and comparing readings – one of them said I was going to write a bestselling trilogy that would be made into a film, so watch this space!

In the run up to Christmas one year I had to interview ten different shopping mall Santas about their lives for the other eleven months of the year, and taste-test Easter eggs a few months later. Once, when editing a homes and interiors magazine, I was working late in a big open plan office and heard shrieks of excitement from the Cosmo girls a few desks along whose eyes had been fixed to the newswires waiting for news of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ baby to be born. That was the first time I heard the words ‘Stop the Press!’ which until then I thought was a fictional phrase dreamed up to make movies about Fleet Street more exciting. I’ve never had reason to shout this phrase myself, more’s the pity, but I could totally relate to my reporter character in Me, You and Tiramisu and her excitement at breaking the story of Will. The cut-throat world of tabloid journalism is one that I loved writing about, and one I’m quite glad to have left behind!

BT – Who’s That Girl? By Mhairi McFarlane.

Happy Tuesday fellow Book Geeks of the world.

Thank you so much for joining me today as I host day number 12 of Mhairi McFarlane’s, Who’s That Girl, Blog Tour.

I have the usual book and author info and a mini review for you, but just to wet your chops, I have an exclusive extract for you too.

Shall we get started?

💛 Blurb: When Edie is caught in a compromising position at her colleagues’ wedding, all the blame falls on her – turns out that personal popularity in the office is not that different from your schooldays. Shamed online and ostracised by everyone she knows, Edie’s forced to take an extended sabbatical – ghostwriting an autobiography for hot new acting talent, Elliot Owen. Easy, right? Wrong. Banished back to her home town of Nottingham, Edie is not only dealing with a man who probably hasn’t heard the word ‘no’ in a decade, but also suffering an excruciating regression to her teenage years as she moves back in with her widowed father and judgy, layabout sister. When the world is asking who you are, it’s hard not to question yourself. Who’s that girl? Edie is ready to find out.

💛 Extract: Chapter 3

💛About the author:

Mhairi was born in Falkirk, Scotland in 1976. She went to school in Nottingham, studied English Literature at Manchester University and then returned to Nottingham to delight its citizens with her journalism. After roles as trainee reporter, reporter, feature writer and columnist, she realised she’d climbed to the very top of the mountain at the Nottingham Post and at age 31 decided to write a novel. Some very skint years followed, during which she thought she might’ve made a huge mistake. Well she didn’t and she is now an internationally best selling author.

You can find out more about Mhairi and her books through her website:

Twitter: @MhairiMcF

So, that’s your lot. Only messing, as if I was going to leave you without telling you my thoughts on the book.

💛Mini (well, medium length) Review: Who’s That Girl? is without a doubt, Mhairi’s best work. It is compelling and heartbreaking and heartwarming and has your emotions everywhere all the time and at the same time. It also has you cackling like a witch. It’s naughty and I love that. I love the realisms and the sniggers that you do when you read because you know you do what Edie and her friends do too. We don’t admit that kind because we’re all ever so lovely aren’t we? 😜The sarcasm, the dark humour, the sibling fights, the banter, it wraps around you with the heartache and the heart warmth and the love and the sadness and oh just all the fucking feels all the fucking time! I loved it. I loved every single minute of it me.

You know what though? There is a vulnerability in this read that I really did connect with and it opens up a world of darkness that is still surrounded by stigma. Depression/Suicide/Mental Health in general, losing a loved one. These things should be spoken about and they should be done with ease and truths and laughter and heart because it’s what we all deserve isn’t it? There will be people reading this who like me connect deep within the words and the characters and it helps you. It helps make you feel worthy and not alone. And to me because of that it puts this book ahead of all the others ever.

There is no other RomCom as good as this. It so deserves a film.

Of course I’m awarding it 5/5 it deserves every start available.

P.S… Mhairi, once again, thank you! You’re fucking amazing!

So that’s me finished my loves. Thank you once again for joining me today and I urge you all to go buy this amazing book right now. All links are below and to make it even better it’s only 99p right now on ebook. Go get yourselves a treat and put your feet up for a bit. You deserve it!

I’m sorry…

Just wanted to let you all know that I’ll be taking some time out of TBGWP.
On Sunday we lost the anchor to our family. My beautiful mum. I am so so proud of her, there honestly will never be another like her. I am absolutely heartbroken for her because she had so much life left to give. Bless her so much.
I really do hope you understand.

Book Review: Beware That Girl by Teresa Toten.

🚺 Beware That Girl by Teresa Toten.

Source: review copy courtesy of Hotkey Books – thank you!

🚺 BLURB: Kate O’Brien has always been known as the scholarship kid, running away from a terrible past and overcoming obstacles, some more sinister than others. She’s determined to make a better life for herself. She deserves it. And at the elite Waverly school, Kate is willing to do whatever it takes to climb the social ladder and land her spot at Yale.

There’s one girl in particular who catches Kate’s eye. Olivia Michelle Sumner, all born blonde and rich and just messed up enough for Kate to latch on to. As for Olivia, she’s a damaged girl, looking to be mended. She finds something promising in Kate. A study buddy. A best friend. A sister she never had. But even a vulnerable girl like Olivia has her own dark past to contend with. When the handsome and whip-smart Mark Redkin joins the Waverly administration, he manages to woo the whole student body, paying particular attention to Olivia – an affair she very much wants to keep to herself, especially from Kate. And as a man who knows just how to get what he wants, Kate realises that Mark poses a huge threat, in more ways than she is willing to admit.

🚺 MY REVIEW: So I just finished this book with a scrunched up smirk on my face. You know the one? The one that means it was more than good. That it was sly and vindictive and the bitch in you can’t get enough? Yeah, well that one. Although I must add that there was definitely a little bit of applaud/congratulation nodding for Teresa Toten thrown in for good measures too because to be honest with you it was more than I expected it to be. Right from the off you think you possibly see where it’s all going and you hold on to your own instincts thinking you’re amazingly smart only to be laughed at maliciously when the truth all comes spiralling out. You’ve got to give kudos to the author for that haven’t you? Totally shows how great of a writer they are when they can do that. So Teresa, good on you girl 👍🏻

Beware That Girl is clever, twisted, dark and dangerous. It’s secretive, frustrating, obsessive, disillusioned and utterly captivating. It’s original and feisty and to be fair does upset you at times as there is a dark, sensitive and in-depth underlining to the plot throughout the read that will definitely shock you. Which has been written with respect and care which I appreciate when faced with what can be a uncomfortable part of a book. We’re not heartless are we, but we do love a sob story don’t we?

So teaming all that up with a small but thriving cast of diverse and excellent characters gives us an intimate and bizarre family structure like no other.

Overall this is one fantastic read!

A book that leaves you dangling by a thread over the wealthy New York skyline waiting for you to drop deep fast and hard to your death. Fabulous!
